Electric door lock

My electric door lock works on the passenger door and the hatchback only. The driver door doesn't unlock, nor lock via the lock switch on the side of the driver's door next to the power windows.

Is this normal? Or is there a wire loose inside my driver's door?

Also - did this BII XLT (1990) come with a remote door lock? Or is it key only?

My real question is whether or not it is SUPPOSED TO unlock/lock the driver's door? I can see how Ford (always a better idea) could argue to themselves that the driver's door doesn't need an electric lock.

Also - should turning the driver side door key lock open or lock any other locks?

Just trying to understand how it is supposed to work. I might not have any problem at all.

Good point Hawk, Perhaps a eyeball cruise through the owner's manual would help.

Electric door lock

I had the power lock on my passenger door die a year ago on my 89 XLT It turns out that it just started to get a little gummed up because it was old. The problem started when the winter hit and the low temps made the grease really tacky, by summer it didnt work anymore so i simply replaced the motor and its been fine ever since. Now the drivers side lock is begining to get gummed up itself and i will probably have to clean it out or replace that one too by the spring. But in response to Hawk's question, both locks should be power, at least in an 89XLT.

had the same thing on my 89 b2, just take them(the motors) out. be careful not to lose the little ball bearings, and clean them really well with wd40. replace them in reverse of removal and while your at it smear them with some white lithium grease. white lithium doesn't
freeze and will last a lifetime, and while your at it why not grease the window tracks and lock mechanisms while your in the horrible, one arm in and cramped position anyway..lol....good luck.

Thanks for the help. I think I now know what needs to be done.

Is R&R of the door panel a job for a novice? Any tricks to it? Seems like years ago in another lifetime I pulled a door panel off and lived to regret it.

Electric door lock

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Oct-02 AT 08:39 PM (EST)]Yeah the R&R is simple actually. Just remember the screws in the bottom of the door panel and be careful around your door handles not to crack the plastic bezels, they go for about 8 bucks each at the dealer if you can get them. And put a cup under the power lock assembly in case a bearing drops down, took me about 1 hour to fish one out of the bottom of the door once with a magnet and they are small!!!
