Performance Air Filter, Which ONE?

I have a 98' Explorer 4WD SOHC. I don't want the replacement OEM drop in filter from K&N but instead want the K&N Fuel Injection Performance kit which replaces the entire cleaner assembly. I called K&N and a woman there told me that they had only approved the use of the kit up to the 97'Year Explorer 4WD SOHC. Can anyone tell me if I get the one listed for the 95-97 model and use it in my 98'? Any other makes that will work?

Thanks

I have a 98 Ford Explorer V-6. Why is the K/N filter bad for Explorers?

What the hell? K & N bashing day? This guy is asking abotu a cold air intake system. But I do like the fancy marketing "K&N Fuel Injection Performance kit".

I didn't pick up that any of the replies have actually used a cold air induction, or even know what that is - based on the replies. I have never tried a drop in K & N filter. I guess my mechanical engineer background told me that if you have the same limiting restriction, then the air filter element can't fix that. The stock box has about a 1.5" diameter intake on it. This, and the hot air by pass valve, are the limiting factors, not the filter element.

Now some have argued that the oil required on the filter can contaminate a MAF sensor. I have seen no case studies or hard data on this. I went to a cold air intake 3 years ago. At that time I put on a new aftermarket MAF. I have not had to clean it once. I've probably cleaned and reoiled the filter 5 times since then.

So go for it! Anytime you reduce an air flow restriction in or out of a motor, you only allow the motor to rev up faster. If you don't believe me, put your hand over the top of a carbureted engine and open up the throttle with your other hand. No, it wont rev up. Just don't start asking about advertised vs real HP gains. I just had to end that debate on another thred by giving the derivation of horsepower calcualtion.

Oh yeah - don't buy a K&N kit - way too expensive. There are a lot of other companies out there. Do a search on the web. The one I bought, KKM True Rev was specifically designed for the early Explorer - 93 for me. May have one for you. Find out here. http://www.explorer4x4.com/reviews.html

No No! Do my recommendation. I get commission. Whatever. Airraids are nice looking for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if K&N built all the filter elements for all these manufacturers.

Check out a Volant kit. If they made one for the 302's - I would probably be running it...
