rear seal leaking?

I just bought a 1987 ford ranger with the 2.3 Litre motor.I was told the rear seal has a leak however the guy I bought it from knows even less mechanically than I do. If you can believe that after this question. If my rear seal is leaking wouldn't my clutch disc have signs of oil on it and if so is there an inspection cover that will allow me access to check it out without pulling the tranny could it just be loose oil pan bolts allowing oil to come out from my rear oil pan seal instead. The truck only has 79000 miles on it.

Welcome to FTE!

I'd inspect the gasket area and re-torque the tranny pan bolts down to specs, just so there is no confusion as to that being the source of a leak. After that, if you don't see any leaks, then no need to sweat it. You ought to pick up a Haynes Repair Manual for your model Ranger from your local auto parts store. It will help you identify the symptoms and causes of these kinds of issues.

A lot of times oil can drip down from the top of an engine and collect at the bellhousing.

leaking rear seal

Thank-You for the replies. I have checked the pan bolts and even though some were a little loose I drove the truck to work tonight and it was still leaking from somewhere. I will probably have to pull the tranny and replace the sucker . I hope it isn't to big a pain. If you can offer any tips that will help save me time please let me know. I did buy a haynes truck manual today. Is this something I should be able to do by myself.

thanks
Jim
