Axle coding for a 24J in a 73-79

I've had a hard time researching this online as well as on the different forums on this site. I found one place saying that a 24 meant a Dana 60 5300lb with 4.10s but there was no accounting for the J part. I'm wondering if that has anything to do with some sort of traction unit? Also curious about how hard it would be to find and have a locker installed on said rear end. I suppose if its not gonna be 4 wheel drive it might as well grip all that it can for towing situations and boat ramps and that sort of thing(not that I have a boat but you know what I mean right?) It seems like any kind of posi unit would be pointless because it would probably wear out very quickly on such a big heavy duty vehicle.

J == Power steering

The code is 24 for the rear axle and J for the front axle.

Usually a letter and a number denotes a LS rear (limited slip) Such as H9 = 3.50ls
A double number usually indicates an open rearend, so 24 would be an open rearend.

Yea that does sound about right even with some of the newer vehicles. I forget what it was for a LS 3.27 in an 8.8 like E7 or something like that where in many 8.8s in trucks and aerostars there is 24 and 25. Cool thanks for the info

The OEM manuals and some aftermarket manuals have axle code charts in them.
