I have searched for the article and can't find it now, I have found parts of the results charts, and quotes from the article but not the whole tamale.
Racers like the powergluide and the C4 because they are lighter than the others and can be built to handle big HP.
As I recall the AOD ate HP
I'm going with a built C4 behind my Flatmotor for weight savings and to handle the massive horsepower that will be made, for the Three-0-Two, a stock C4 or C6 will easily handle all that can be wrung out of it.

I've got a dumb question ??? seem like years ago when I was playing with small blocks...302 and 351Ws in a 72 f-100 I remember the C-4 being the only (of the two) that would bolt up to a small block... does a c-6 have the same bolt pattern as a c-4 or doyou need one of them a-daptor kits or sumthin ???

learning with every breath..

Good question. Not every transmission can be fitted to every engine. I don't know of a C4 bellhousing to fit the Y-block. They don't have overdrive transmissions for the FE.

Short answer; yup, they put C6's behind many Cleveland 351s and lots of vans and trucks with 351W had C6's. Funny thing is that even though the C6 is a heavy duty transmission, it's not very popular behind small blocks. Too many other choices (C4, AOD).

No adapter needed just get one that was/is bolted to a small block. I had one in my first 56 (351W/C6) I got the trans from a econoline van that had the same powertrain.

Thanks to all those who replied. The choice seems to be unanimous; a C-4 it is.
Thanks again.

Some basic source info

Engine Trans Type
122L4-20-C4
140L4-23-C4
171V6-28-C4
200L6-33-C4
240L6-C4
250L6-C4
289V8-C4
300L6-C4
302V8-50-C4
351MV8-57-C4 Big Block Bell Housing Pattern
351WV8-57-C4

I would avoid the early Six Cylinder Trannys
Some of the Early models had a Smaller input shaft – If necessary they can be changed.
For more indepth hash of the C4 go to: http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/c4.html

AOD add on

Did I read correctly that AOD can be added to a C4 trans? Does this apply to all C4's? Looking for the right combo for my 56 with a 351w, would this be a good choice? How about if I increase th hp on the 351, still good?
