I'm working on a friends 1996 F350 powerstroke. I rescued them from a parking lot by jumping the starter relay. I replaced the relay and it seemed to crank/start fine. Tested it multiple times and sent them on their way. Worked fine for a couple of days and then happened again.

This time I ck'd to see if I was getting power from ign switch to relay. Which I was not, so I replaced the switch on column under dash. Cranked and started fine during multiple tests. And of course the phone rings a few hours later it won't start.

The truck has about 160000 miles mostly highway. I have cleaned and serviced both batteries, checked the cables, and ck'd most connections. When it cranks it seems fine.

Looking for something I'm over looking or any other ideas.

How about hooking up a test light or a voltmeter to the starter side of the solinoid. Put it inside the cab so they can monitor it. Perhaps it is the starter.

 

Yeah I was thinking the starter may have a bad spot on it. I'll ck that out next.
