My friend picked up a wreck from the auction yesterday and droped it off so I could get it running so it could be mobile, it had a tree fall on the bed. Anyway it's a early pd 2004 with a 2003 motor according to the valve covers. I put 2 fresh batteries in and ck'd the fluids. It started up after a 15 second crank, I let it warm up and it's SO quiet it's almost like a 6.4. Is this normal or a freak ? Oh it's a CCSB Lariat and will be for sale and has most of the desidered options except sunroof

Sounds like it's still got the pilot injection flash in it. There are still a few of those running around.
If that's the case I want it for my truck, my neigbors won't look at me funny everytime I go by anymore. Plus it's soooo smooth !
The pilot injection flash was DC'd on the early injector trucks because it was causing massive failures to injectors. I know you can get tuning from Innovative Diesel that has pilot injection but not from Ford.
Is it really hard on injectors or was it a myth, this truck has 160 on the clock and runs sweet
Well.....not sure that we'll ever know the real story there because the internal design of the injector was changed about the same time. I know I lost 10 in my 03 truck in less than 700 miles on the odometer and never had it after that so I can't say for sure. I had a pilot injection flash in this truck for a short time but it disappeared for bigger and better things. Sure is nice at a drive through though.
One thing nice about the pre-injection is quite and fuel economy ,I lost 4mpg when they remove mine without asking and was I pissed, it sounded like a 7.3, asked them to reinstall it and they said they couldn't . It's hard on the ficm they told me.

Pilot Injection was dropped due to poor cold starts and idle smoke.
Matt @ Gearheads can still write Pilot-Injection tunes and, as luck would have it, I just emailed Vivian last week about creating a pilot-injection Looney Tune.
I fired it up again tonight, just for kicks, I haven't ordered any tunes for my Livewire but if I can get my truck to run like this one I gonna order them. Kenny said he'd drop the dealer plate off and let me drive it over to the shop to give it a shake down in the AM....feel like a kid in a candy store.

I got so much misinformation back in the early days of the 6.0 (as I think we all did) I was just relaying what I was told. I had so many flashes and so much trouble with my first truck I never looked back.
Good to know about the PI tunes. If/when I ever get enough $$$ to get my turbo replaced I'm going to ask Vivian if she'll rewrite my looney to go along with my FICM flash and "new" turbo.

She's on vacation right now, hence the delay. There is a couple discussions on Matt's pilot-injection tunes over at .org I stumbled across a couple weeks ago that leaked my interest.
