Question 460 Smog in CA?

I have a 1978 F150 4x4 with a 1969 460 dove in it. I bought the truck in nevada. It has pretty much no emission control stuff on it. Will it be possible for me to smog this in CA? Is it hard to get emission parts? And is it possible for it to get exempt due to the older engine?
Thank you,
Quentin O.

I don't live in Cali, so this is purely opinion based on what I have read previously.

While other states can be a little lax on the visual inspection, as long as you pass the sniffer, I understand that Cali is very strict on all aspects of the test.

You are probably going to have to put the emissions equipment back on.

The above post is correct. It won't matter if the engine in your truck is from a pre smog era. You may get by with pre smog heads if it will pass the sniffer test but everything else has to on and connected properly to pass the visual test.

California emissions requiremets require all smog equipment to be on the engine for the model year. However bringing in a vehicle from another state may be exempt as long as any emissions equipment that orginally came with the truck is still on it. I'm not sure on this one.

Check out this site. Surf the site for more infor.

according to the site, it has to be 30 years old, model year wise, before it is exempt, as it states on the title, so the 78 will have to meet standards for a 78, even though it has the older bb in it.

i have all the smog equipment hooked up on my truck, its a true california truck though. my advice is this, go to the junk yard and buy the doors off a 73 truck. will fit the same and have the vin on it. then just register your truck as a 73. i doubt they will check the frame vin but if so...you will have to buy a frame and transplant everything, which is a waste.....so either try the door thing or just go to the junk yard and get all the smog crap off a smog era motor, working or not, then stick it on ur engine and make sure it is all hooked up right. my is hooked up but nothing works because it is so old and just broken. if your engine is running good then you should pass the smog no problem...just remeber to change the oil, give it a tune up, and fresh gas before the test. i have heard that a higher than normal octance helps...so maybe a tank of 92? good luck

I don't think the door swap will work, even if you do find one with matching colors. The smog test station will ask for your vehicle registration which will have the model year and VIN # on it.

Check out the web site. Make some calls to the D.M.V. Get as much information as you can. If you have to bring your truck up to specs., come back with what information you have and perhaps we or some other knowledgable people on the forums can help with your project. Good luck!

CA is very, very strict. The door thing won't work - and could land you in a whole lot of trouble in the meanwhile.

Less populated areas in CA do not have smog requirements. If you want to move this truck to CA, move it (register it) in one of these areas. Or don't bring in into the state.

It's really that bad.

You cant get a 78 1/2 ton 4x4 460 smoged even with smog equipment on it. Ford never offered a 460 in a 1/2 or 3/4 ton 4x4 in 78 and that is what the tech will be looking at. I dont think your going to be able to get that truck smoged with that motor in Calif outside of doing somthing shady. I had a Calif. smog license and let it laps about a year ago but at that time I would not have smog it. I would have sent you to the state refree and you would have to talk to him about it but more than likely hes going to tell you to put a stock engine in it..Sorry for the news but thats how it goes in the golden state.
