Flashing 3rd brake light?!?

I don't know why some cars have it and most cars don't (thankfully). Does anybody know if there is a relay that I can change or bypass to stop my 3rd brake light from flashing when I put the brakes on? How much trouble would it be to wire it to the 2 rear brake lights since they don't flash?

Flashing 3rd brake light?!?

When the brakes are applied, the 2 rear brake lights come on like normal, the 3rd brake light flashes about 10 times (approx. 1/2 sec on 1/2 sec off) then stays lit like the 2 rears until the brakes are released. I guess it is some "hot new safety idea" garbage. I have noticed it on a few other cars. I do not recall noticing it on any other super duty trucks, but I don't usually think about it.

I've never heard of this? Are you sure? Where do you live?

This seems kinda dangerous to me. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to drive with a flashing light other than amber in Canada, and even then only as a "hazard warning" at reduced speed. It's reserved for emergency vehicles.

If you're from California I won't be surprised.

Flashing 3rd brake light?!?

Did you buy the truck used?

If so, the previous owner could have installed a flasher type thing commonly used on motorcycles. Removing the cover(s) to access the wiring to see if anything "extra" is in there seems to be in order here. If there is, just remvoe it. 3rd brake lights do not flash from the factory.

Although...it can be a nice safety feature.

Flashing 3rd brake light?!?

its a after market kit.... just remove the 3rd brake light and then the kit. below is one products description, I am sure this is what you have or a simlair product.

"""BackOFF Safety Module

BackOFF lights are "obnoxious by design." The pattern, three short flashes followed by one long flash, repeats as long as the brakes are applied. This pattern was not randomly determined, but based on research of the human short-term memory process, and a person's ability to remain focused on a hazard.""""

Flashing 3rd brake light?!?

I bought my truck new from a dealer in SC who got it from a dealer in NC. I'll start paying more attention to what other vehicles have it. I'll also check to see if there is any aftermarket device in the 3rd brake light, if there is, then my dealer will provide me with a NEW truck.:-staun

Flashing 3rd brake light?!?

SOB!
I checked behind my 3rd brake light and found a flasher relay! It looked to be a high quality installation (weather proof spade connectors, etc.). I guess the dealer in NC (Keith Hawthorne Ford, Belmont, NC) must have installed it. I got the truck with 123 miles on it and the dealer I got it from (Ben Satcher, Lex, SC) is about 111 miles from Belmont. So I feel pretty sure it was new. Thanks for all the help and my aplogies to all the people that my flashing 3rd brake light has annoyed. The good thing is maybe not many people saw it since these awesome trucks sit up so high!
