Hi friends , I am new and in big trouble .. I need some help real fast too.. My ford f150 , 1987, I went to put turn the key and it just amost go's completely around and doesn't make starter contact at all.. I need to replace it and I thought it was like the 70's gen motors where you could puch a pin in and turn and it pop's out ..But no! Hrm.... Well Im not to familiar with those model trucks, but they are in the column correct?
If so they are a PITA... take the wheel off, tear the column apart, and then take them out

 

I replaced one on my 1992 SHO and it was a piece of cake. Take off the bottom plastic cover off the column, remove ignition assembly and replace. It took about 25 minutes, stopping for 2 beers.

 

On my 1988 f250 I had to pull the steering wheel to get at the switch. With the wheel out of the way it was an easy job.You just nee a puller to get the steering wheel off.

 

This happened to me in my87 f250. Turned out it was the automatic gear shifter . Seems to be some kind of kill switch on the shifter, now sometimes I have to hold the shifter in certin position to get it to turn over! Havnt time to fix it yet but it still works!

There are many reasons this could happen. A broken actuater rod, screwed up key lock, or a bad switch. The key lock is the easiest to replace. Put the key in, turn to the on position, put a pin in the hole under where the key lock goes into the column and then pull the lock out. If this is not your problem, the switch is located on the top of the column under the dash. Its not hard to get to, just take the panels off, take the four bolts out that are holding the column up in the aluminum mount, take the nut off of the top of the plastic swithc and replace the switch. The hardest to replace would be the actuater rod. You have to take the steering wheel off, take the turn signal apparatus out, then take the linkage system apart and replace the actuater rod.

 

hi =) ....trying to figure out how to adjust an ignition rod on a 1990 E150 ford van. i have the book but it doesnt tell me how to do that part. BBiffle you mentioned actuater rod...thought maybe u could direct me in the right direction, be it a book i can buy or telling me how threw here. to anybody "HELP" =) thanks.
