Major leak Transmission blow out - Help
Hi everybody, Well I had a major leak from the transmission while going to the cottage. 200$ later for towing, my truck is sitting in a garage yard, waiting for monday for repair.
The leak came from a tube between the trany and the engine., I mean a major leak, I could not move anymore after the leak. I was stuck in the woods, 30 km from nowhere, up in northern Quebec, saguenay region. Snow on the ground, minus 5, waited 3 hours for a towing, had a few beer with the friends, might as well enjoy it, for 200 dollars, it must be a party, started to have fun, we came back in my truck on a flatbed.
Well, monday wont be so much fun when they tell me what's wrong.
Any idea what blew up in my trany?

The only thing i can think of from the way ya described it was that one ya have an automatic. And the problem was the cooling lines that go from the tranny to the raditor. There is rubber conectors betweent steel lines. since yar tranny moves a little with engine vibration they use rubber klines so as not to fatigue the steel lines. You could have torn one of those lines wich would pump all the atf out of the tranny rather quickly and make the truck not move. If this is the case the repair wont cost much. If however your torgue converter went bad and started leeking the fluid out wich would not come form a tube but just drip/run out from the joint were the tranny meets the motor yar in for a big reapir bill. Good luck and let me no what it was.

The fluid seemed to be very out, although it was dripping in snow and obviously melting it. I will check today if I have a line that blew off. I checked out those line the other day and some were touching and rubbing, I was gone put some clamps here and there to reroute them. May be I waited too long, preventive maintenance the say...
I wonder, if the trany ran too hot is there a chance that it broke anything inside, I stopped as soon as it started poring under.

Heat definitly kills trannys if you blew a line and all the fluid came out most likely it did not harm anything. This is counting it was in good shape before hand and you stopped rite away. The tranny fluid would be very hot coming out esspcailly if it was a cooler line particuarly the line going to the cooler. Iam not sure the exact specs on how hot ford trannys run but some were in the 200 degree farhient range is typical for automatics. Some one else out here might no a more precis number but defintly hot enough to melt snow thats for sure. Good luck and let me no what it is casue iam curious.
