1989 f150 check engine light

Hello all, I'm new here, just picked up an 89 f150, 5.0L, x-cab short box. My first ford pickup. its got about 290,000 km's on it. A week after i picked it up the rear main seal on the engine went so now i have a large oil leak, and the check engine light comes on intermittently.

Does anyone know the procedure to get the codes to flash? I havent picked up a manual yet.

thanks

Rhys

It would probably be easier to pick up a manual than for me to try to explain it to you. The manual shows the connectors and walks through the procedure to check the codes. You can use a jumper wire w/check engine light or a voltmeter to check the codes. Its pretty straight forward with the manual. The manual also has a listing of what the codes are. If you still want to be walked through the procedure let me know.

You can pick up a cheap code scanner (30 Bucks) at most of your local auto parts store. It comes with a book that gives you what all the codes mean to

If you buy a code reader make sure you get the EECIV/OBDI reader, not the OBDII reader. On Fords, OBDII didn't kick in until 1996.
