Fuel filter/fuel pump

I think my fuel filter may need changed, well i know it needs changed but im not surte if its the cause of my problem or not. On my 89 f150 4.9 i can be driving down the road and just feel like a jerk or a miss. then everything seems ok again. when i give it paret throttle it feels a little rough sometimes. i put fuel injector cleaner through it regularly. Is the filter causing my jerk/ roughness?
I have been having problems my front fuel pump working for awhile and then not working for awhile. i I thought that i would have to replace the pump but someone told me if i put on a new filter it would work again because its just to weak to pump through my filter as dirty as it is. could that be right? i have a filter sitting beside me but i have heard that i need a special tool to change it so i will have to have someone do it.

I had the same problem. I changed it my self with needle nose pliers. Only I never took my time, in a rush and broke of 1 of the 4 male fittings on the filter case. It cost me around $80.00 to chang the fuel filter,LOL. But it did solve the problem, And I was the one who solved it.

The tool you need to change the filter is a very simple little piece of plastic. Would definately cost you less than 1 hours labour in a shop. I'm sure if you go to your local parts dealer they will help you with the tool. Also, remember: do not try to pull the filter off without first releasing the pressure in the fuel system. this will result in a gaseous discharge. (ie: gas all over you and your truck and everything else in a 30ft. radius). Changing the filter on my '94 took me .5 hour max. my first shot at it too. i'd say talk to the parts guys and go for it!

i neve rdid find the little button. instead, i had a hanes manual, so i found the relay in the power bistributon box for the fuel pump. started the motor, puilled the relay and waited for the stall. shut the truck off, changed the filter reinstalled the relay and she fired right back up! good luck and have fun!

Was the relay as easy as pulling a fuse or did you have to actually pull wires etc?

No wires, same basic process as a fuse.
