HELP - EVR / EGR Problems ?
#34
Ok, the EVR is replaced and this evening I cleared all codes and ran the KOEO test. It came back clean. So replacing the EVR fixed whatever was giving me the 31 code AND the 95 code.
However, while the truck runs like a race horse when I first start out. Once the temp gauge starts to read a little warm, the truck starts running like I stuffed a rag in the intake manifold. Very choked. It won't take gas, has very little power and smokes when I really throttle it. I have a K&N Fuel Injection air kit on it and you can really hear it bogginh when I give it the gas.
Any thoughts ??? It really runs great when cold. Something (obviously) still isn't right......

The truck doesn't run rough, it's actually smooth as silk even when hot. Originally It did run a little rough, but I think the EVR replacement took care of that.
The problem is that when warm it runs very lathargic. When it is cold, it takes gas as quick as you can feed it in, accelerates up steep hills etc. really runs great. After getting warm, I'm lucky to maintain speed up a hill and have trouble accelerating past 45 mph. Feels just like I am obstructing air intake or not getting enough fuel ......
Timing was way off when I go the truck, about 25 degrees, I think whoever did the timing prior to me didn't remove the SPOUT first or they were compensating for other things being bad, like the EVR. I reset the timing to 10 degrees. Tonight I'm going to play with this a little more and see if it has any effect on my problem.
I'm also going to cut the Cat out and see if that makes a change. My thought being that the air flow requirements are less when the engine is cold and therefore the truck runs OK. When it warms up and requires more air to flow through, it may not be getting out the exhaust through Cat and causes the truck to run lathargic.
To build on this theory..... The truck has a rear main seal that is going bad (to be replaced next weekend). When I drive the truck conservatively I get minimal oil leakage and no smoke. When I really flooor it under load (while testing things) I get heavy smoke which originally I thought was coming from the exhaust (I'm always by myself so all I saw was smoke coming out the back). Upon further inspection though, I found that it is not coming from the exhaust but off of the exhaust as a result of the rear main leaking oil onto it.
My Cat blockage theory is - When I really floor it while the engine is hot, the pressure in the block builds up quickly as a result of the need for more air flow and not being able to exhaust it out through the Cat. This forces more oil out the rear main seal and onto the hot exhaust causing the heavy smoke condition that normally doesn't appear..... How's that for a theory ???? Think it carries any weight ?

MGiven,
How much did they charge you for the EVR?
thanks

I ran out at lunch and picked one up at the Ford Dealer. Ran home, threw it in and there is definately a differance ! You can tell it is working because now when I pull the vacuum off the EGR and hold my finger over it, I can feel the vacuum pulse. Where as before I had nothing at all...
Now I just need to replace the rear main seal and check for a head gasket leak..... hopefully that will hold me over for a while !

*** UPDATE ***
Ok, I chopped off the Cat on Friday night. Welded up a replacement pipe from a 32" section of 2 1/2" pipe and a tale pipe downward tip, also 2 1/2 ". Works perfectly for bringing the 2 pipes into 1 for the muffler. I will have to post some pictures of it.
Anyway. The truck is definately running better, but still a little lathargic. I played with the timing which was set at 10 degrees without the SPOUT attached. I moved it to about 18 degrees (after trying 12 then 15) and the truck runs much better. I also tried about 22 degrees but I started getting some pingin when really accellerating hard so I brought it back to about 18.
I have seen several posts about timing and being advanced like this but none of the posts state the outcome or resolution. Has anyone run into this with their truck and was there a cause for having to advance it past 10 degrees ????

well....my EVR doesn't have that "extra" black box...
that's curious.
I started having EGR problems so I'm doing research. I know this is an old thread, but it had some good info.
I'll look again tomorrow, but I don't think my 1990 5.8L Bronco has that "extra" black box between the EVR and the Harness.
