Can you provide more details? Does it only do it in cold weather, hot weather, after running at high speed, etc? how roughly does it normally run, have you pulled plugs to look at them, when was the last time you tuned it, what are the symptoms of how it shuts down (immediately, sputters to a halt, ??) ...LOTS of info needed for a general question like this.

I don't have any way to check the codes.

I am not up on what years have what parts & systems but I think 95 4.9 is EFI.
If so I don't know if it uses a "controller box" as we know it. I think it uses a TFI in the dist that has been known to cause the same issues you are having just ask the Mustang guys.
Does your dist have a vacuum advance can on the side, I don't think it will?
Also where the wires go into the dist is it a plug right at the dist or a "pig tail" with the plug on the end?
Also if it has a plug at the dist the part the wire plugs into would be gray or black.
If that is all true that gray or black unit that screws into the dist is going bad like the older "controller boxes" did.
As for pulling codes hit one of the auto parts stores to see if they can pull them for you.
