carburetor questions/ Number Dummy or???

I am asking in this forum for a friend. Problem is on a big truck 1956 or so.

Has a big Y block and 4 speed, kind of an F-6 or 7. The carburetor on this engine is an odd ball 2 barrel that parts are basically hard to find. The engine it self is like a 292/312 but the manifold where the carburetor bolts up is much different in size than the standard old 2 barrels.

I want to put a later 2 barrel on it just to get it running but the bases are different. I was told that the odd ball base was similar to some other carburetors out there like Rochester or ???

Anyone know what would be a good cross over for this thing?

thanks.

Maybe help by posting pictures of your manifold and current carbureter base plate.

Pictures would help, casting number off the intake would help. Did you try asking the guys in the 48-56 group? If it's the stock engine I bet somebody there knows, lots of the big trucks floating around over there.

Carburetors

I have 2 photos of the bottoms of the carburetors. I will have more of the intake and hopefully some numbers later.

Is the carb a Carter BBD? If so, parts are readily available for it. Chrysler used that carb into the '70's

Look into the small based Rochester 2GC that a lot of chevys, like 283s, used. They are really simple to work on and prior to 1968 the pickup versions have manual choke. I probably have a couple around because I hoard the small base, side inlet 2Gc carbs to sell as cores to the guys who want to use them for 3 deuces.
Ford did use that same base on the last year of flathead Merc IIRC and it was an oddball looking carb. Maybe they used it on early Y blocks too.
