What ball hitch should I buy?

I'm sure this has been discussed but I'm on my phone and searching didn't turn up a lot.

Need to get a ball hitch or mount or whatever it's called to go in the 2.5 inch square receiver hitch that came with the truck. It did come with an adapter to bring the 2.5 to 2 inch. But not sure if that is good for towing or if I should stick with a 2.5 ball mount?

Right now I only have a small utility trailer with a 2 inch ball. But plan on getting a travel trailer and enclosed trailer down the road so I would like to get a decent hitch that will handle that stuff also. Would be nice to be able to switch from 2 inch to 2 5/16 inch ***** fairly easy if possible.

Should I get one that has adjustable height?

Do I want to look into weight distribution for a travel trailer or enclosed trailer?

dont want to spend a fortune but willing to spend a bit for a decent hitch if worth it.

Thanks

Right now I would just get a 2" ball for the utility trailer. I would hold off on buying anything for the future purchase until you actually get it. You won't really know whether a weight distributing hitch will be needed until you know how much the new trailer weighs.

Remember that the trailer tongue should be close to level, so check the height of the tongue and the height of your receiver and pick the hitch accordingly.

Start with a 2.5" drawbar/ball mount and your 2" ball, just get one with the correct drop/rise so your trailer is close to level. When you upgrade to a larger trailer it would depend on the total and tongue weight of the trailer and your tow vehicle capacity to determine if you need a weight distributing hitch. I personally don't like most adjustable drawbars, they provide another failure point, most move the ball back away from the truck and I have seen more than one fail, especially the aluminum ones, although I suspect they had been loaded past their ratings. I have 2 drawbars set up with a 2" and a 2 5/16 ball, much easier than switching the ***** from 1 to the other, a 3rd one with a pintel hook and an Equalizer brand weight distribution hitch with it's own 2.5" drawbar.

Guess I was trying to avoid having a bunch of different hitches laying around. For space and money issues since I don't plan to use them too often. Also there have been times in the past when I needed to pull a different trailer that I didn't plan on pulling so I thought the adjustable one might be nice because I could just carry one hitch with me and be able to pull most trailers.

But I guess you're right a one size fits all solution probably isn't the best in this situation. So looks like I will get a 2.5 inch draw bar with a 2 inch ball for now and then when I get the bigger trailer I will have to look into another hitch.

Just for future reference, let's say I'm getting a 8.5 by 24 foot enclosef trailer what should I be looking at for hitches? Don't think I mentioned it in my first post but tow vehicle is a 2015 f250 diesel.

For an 8.5 x 24 trailer with any kind of weight in it, I would be looking at an Equalizer Hitch for both the weight distribution as well as the anti-sway.

Equal-i-zer® Hitch - The ?American Original? with 4-Point Sway Control? and Weight Distribution

The "Equal-i-zer" brand is a very good hitch, it has built in sway control and is top quality.

We just had to buy EVERYTHING to pull this 21' travel trailer. Reciever, hitch, and very expensive raodmaster suspension. But better safe than sorry. It was a real shock though.

We bought the solid steel ball hitch with no drop down and that really helped to keep it straight and give us more adjusting height room. Raodmaster brought the van up too and strengthens the rear and gives more control of steering. The first rip without these addictions was WHITE NUCKLE.
