I bought an F350, diesel, that has the 3" hitch receiver with the 2.5" and 2" adapters. I want to purchase a Weigh-Safe hitch with a scale but I don't know which one to buy. I've never towed anything and don't own a trailer. I am planning to tow rental landscaping equipment (that comes with a trailer) and I may possibly tow a (2 horse) horse trailer.
I would like to know your opinions on:
1. The maximum drop I will most likely need
2. If I should buy the 2.5" or the 3" hitch receiver
3. If it would be worth purchasing the optional 1 7/8" ball (the Weigh-Safe hitch comes with a 2 5/16" ball and a 2" ball).
I can't imagine why you wouldn't get a 3 inch shank when you have a 3 inch receiver. I mean, why use adapters if you don't have to. On the drop size, 8 inches would accommodate every trailer possible and a 6 inch accommodates 90 % of the trailers out there. The only reason you wouldn't get the 8 inch drop is because you think you might drag it on the road or rocks some time. If you think you might pull a 1 7/8's ball trailer, best to just get it.
I purchased the 1 7/8's ball as a just in case. When I rented a piece of equipment a few months ago, the trailer that it came on used a 1 7/8's ball. It was one of those occasions that makes you glad to be prepared. The guy at the rental place was impressed with how quickly I swapped out the *****.
I have a 6" drop on my '14. The newer ones are a bit taller, so the 8" seems to be the best option there.
Going with the largest shank size that DOESN'T require a sleeve is going to be the best.
If you plan on getting a hitch lock, you may want to call Trunk Monkey, 888-260-6168, tell them you would like it keyed alike to the hitch. Saves you a bit and you only have one key for both. Also tell them you are a FTE Member and you will get 10% off plus free shipping. There's another thread on this, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...upon-here.html Hope this helps. Mine is in the mail thanks to this thread!
I've never pulled a trailer that's 1-7/8 but I guess they are out there. Definitely get the 3" shank, I got a 8" drop but looking at I would've been OK with the 6", it just would be at the bottom for 2 of my trailers.
Thanks so much for your help with this. I will definitely take advantage of the discount and I'll also order the hitch lock at the same time, so I'll only have to mess with one key. Only 300 more miles until I can tow... I'm looking forward to it!
