Why is my master cylinder in the wrong place

I am working on the stock drum brakes for my 55 and needed to bleed the lines. I removed the oval access plate in the floor board just left of the tunnel access plate and was surprised to NOT find the master cylinder. It is located almost a foot to the rear. What's up with that? Do I have some kind of aftermarket deal or ????

If this is stock, how does one check and fill?

Thanks Rick.

Not stock. You will need to get a remote fill device that folks usually mount on the firewall.

Has your floor boards been changed where your feet would rest, if so a 56 floor board patch panel may have been used instead of the 53-55 patch panel..

Post a pic so we know what you got. Mine is after market using a Mustang II master and booster, No remote fill and never an issue. Once bled and filled you should not need to add fluid unless you have leaks. A little time consuming and tricky filling but compared to other things no big deal.

Thanks for the info guys. Pan looks original. Old and no obvious extraneous stitch welding anywhere. Any reason I can't just install another access panel and spare the expense of installing the remote fill kit?

The fill hole would probably be under the seat

Like BJ said that knock out plate should be under the seat on a 55, if it's beside the transmission tunnel cover that is where the 56 would be and why I asked if the floor pans were changed out on your truck..

Seems like we might have broken the code with the 55 vrs 56 deal. And yes it seems like it could be a nuisance under the seat, (obviously Ford figured that out for the 56 model year), I'll roll the dice and cut a new access plate betting on Truckee's thoughts that I won't need to get into that very often.

Thanks all for your input.

Rick

I do not think that master cylinder is mounted any different between 53-55 and 56 trucks. I have a 53 and 54 cab and both have the hole next to the transmission cover not under seat. If the master is a foot back someone changed it.

This has gotten a bit confusing. The "Original" single bowl (reservoir) master cylinder is located in the same place 53-56 (F100s). It's access is in front of the seat and slightly to the passenger side of the frame rail on the drivers side frame rail. After Market under the cab Dual Bowl (reservoir) Master Cylinders are the ones that end up under the drivers seat. Thus the need of mirrors or remote reservoirs. The distance under the seat has to do with the kit you use, power or no power brakes and which booster is used. Hope this helps and not muddy' the waters.
