2001 F150 front driveshaft turns, no 4wd

When I engage 4wd to either 4H or 4L, the front driveshaft turns but the front differential is not engaging, only rear wheels drive. It is difficult to get the floor shifter into 4H or 4L but it will eventually go in. Any suggestions? It's acting like an old 4wd truck when you engage 4wd but don't get out and lock the hubs.

The front actuator has not engaged for some reason.
Those are the firewall solenoid is stuck, hoses are off, the actuator has an issue.
On the firewall solenoid outside one on the passenger side, remove the small cap on top.
Use some silicone spray lube in the small hole in the center.
Operate the system several times to see if the solenoid is stuck and loosens up.
If yes, the actuator should pull in and clear the issue providing there is no other issue as above.
Good luck.

It's supposed to be -2 here tonight and pretty cold tomorrow. I will check these later in the week when it warms up a bit to see what is or is not happening. Thank you for the suggestions.

If you have been working by the passenger fender well on the batter/ right wheel/ brakes .. its possible that you have pulled off the vacuum line that runs from the solenoids on the firewall, to the axle pumpkin vacuum cylinder.
