Width of 1970 9" rear

I would like some help guys on the measurements of the 1970 f-100 rear end . On an article here on fte I found the measurements for the nine inch to use it says to use one that has a width of 61 inches from axle flange to axle flange now does that mean the axle housing flange that the axle bolts to or does it mean the flange that the wheel bolts to ? I get a 56 1/2 from axle housing flange to axle housing flange. I have everything torn apart for cleaning and rebuild so I did not have the axles in guess I need to slide the axle back in. I did not see the truck that this came. Thanks and hope all had a Merry Christmas.

That 61" is measured from where the wheels mount on the axles. 57-72 9" PU rears are all the same width, so if it really is a '70 axle, you should be good to go.
There should be a tag on one of the diff bolts with the axle code and ratio, etc.

Like said, axle flange is axle face, the other you are referring to is the housing flange.

1957/67 F100 rear brakes are 11" x 1 3/4." Same as 1948/52 F1 & 1953/56 F100.

1968/72 F100 rear brakes are 11" x 2 1/4."

If you are still not sure (as is the case with me on most of these measurement) take a picture with a tape measure at the various places you have flanges and then the guys that know can tell you pic 1 showing x inches or pic 2 showing y inches or pic 3 showing z inches is the correct measurement. Works best for me and these guys are great at answering a well thought out question.

Rear axle housing

If your housing is truly an 1971 F-100 it is a direct bolt-in. That is what I used and it fit perfectly with no modifications except for the shock mounts.

How did you handle the shock mounts?

Same: 1968/72 F100 with 11" x 2 1/4" rear brakes, but...

There are 2 different 9 inchers, most of the parts do not interchange!

1) Standard equipment: 9" with 28 spline axle shafts.

2) Optional: 9" w/a 9 3/8" ring gear, 31 spline axle shafts and 4 pinion Traction-Lok (Limited Slip).

Mine does have the 28 spline axles . I was looking a bookmarked article here and it said that the year I have + /- either side has a different ratio before I checked and mine is 3.25 and they do not list that for a 70 rear.

Uh huh...
AXLE code printed on the Warranty Plate:

07 = 1965 F100 9" 3.25-1 - No Limited Slip.

17 = 1966/72 F100 9" 3.25-1 - No Limited Slip.

this info could possibly send me in the right direction from my head scratcher. 1970 f100 came with the 9 inch 28 spline big bearing early style retainer plate. What the heck is the parts number for the rear wheel bearings n seals n retainer race
