Help, axle codes!
Rear end spit out the axle on my way home last night, dragged for about 25 feet on the backing plate. Glad I was going slow on back roads.
Any way made it home safe. Could have been a lot worse
Now time to repair. The tag from the pumpkin says:
WDM
3 50 6BD 301
What axle from newer truck will fit?
Or should I pluck this axle and have it rebuilt?
Thanks, Brian
I am assuming you have a Ford 9" rear, not a Dana rear?
Not all 28 spline axle are the same. You will not be able to use the axle shafts from '68 - 72, even if they are 28 spline because the standoff off the hub plate is 1/4 inch longer that the earlier axle shafts - the rear brakes are wider, that's why.
If you can find a complete '67 - '72 rear axle, the entire rear axle will bolt right up perfectly in place of your existing axle.
I was over on the slk site and nobody responded. I'm thinking maybe a rebuild is in the near future, being that 61-67 parts are like hens teeth. If rebuild is too pricey I may go with the longer rear end then re-position the shock mounts and the spring pads. That seems to be the path of least resistance.
Oh yeah is the 3 50 from the tag the gear ratio?
Thanks again, BG
Look at that ID tag again, there should be one or more letters after WDM- which when decoded will tell if it has Limited Slip or not.
Look on the Warranty Plate. located on the left door face below the latch for the AXLE code.
Post what you find (it's prolly 08).
6BD = Assembled the fourth week (D) of February (B) 1966 (6).
Hen's teeth?
LOL...9 inch rear axle parts are EZ to find.
Most 1957/87 9 inch rear axle parts are the same. Passenger car: 1957/79 / F100/150: 1957/87.
1969/87 9's use a different pinion seal and differential bearings.
All these parts are available at NAPA, some are prolly are still available from Ford.
When you are ready, I'll list all the usual parts required to rebuild it, including axle & spider gears (prolly not necessary), all the bearings with Ford & autoparts store part numbers, the seals and other misc goodies.
I will look at the door for more codes. The axle tag has numbers after WDM but I can't make them out. On the back there is no indentation like behind the WDM, could be 38 or 3M. Will go to the door, hope it's the original door after all these years.
Thanks again, BG

The axle gaskets and housing gasket don't have industry numbers, neither does the pinion shaft.
I couldn't find the industry # for the pinion seal, but it's the same for cars/trucks 1957/68.
NAPA and good indie autoparts stores can also cross the Ford part numbers over to the brands they sell.
NOTE: You may need one or more U-Joints: One type has two different sized cups = 1310 & 1330 = C5AZ-4635-F / Industry # 210392-X

ND,
Wow what a list! Will use it to get quotes. Start at NAPA.
I raise my nightcap to you.

Thanks, BG
Ford updated the part number...actually they updated it 4 times!
B8A-4676-B to C2AZ-4676-B to D1UZ-4676-A to E2TZ-4676-B.
The same pinion seal fits 1957/87.
