So, I used to have, somewhere, a guide to identifying what axle is on my truck, a 1970 F-100 XLT. There are apparently three different axles it can be, and three different part numbers for the axle I need, and each one depends on which axle. I tried googling it, and got nothing but rear end codes. Anyone know what the markings are to figure out which axle it is?

There were three different rear axles offered for 1968/72 F100's:
1) Ford 9" rear axle w/a 3300 lb. capacity, 28 spline axleshafts. Equa-Lok (Limited Slip) was optional.
2) Ford 9" rear axle w/a 3300 lb. capacity, w/Traction-Lok and 28 spline axleshafts.
3) Ford Heavy Duty 9" rear axle w/a 9 3/8" ring gear, 3600 lb. capacity w/Traction-Lok and 31 spline axleshafts.
Post the AXLE code found on the Warranty Plate, which is located on the left door face below the latch.
The Ford rear axle ID tag is at circa 5 o'clock under one of the bolts that retains the carrier (pumpkin) to the housing.
I was looking for my tag under the bolt at the 5:00 position.
Didn't see it and assumed it was missing.
A closer look and some scraping revealed a tag under 2 bolts along the left side of the diff at the 9:00 position. It didn't stick out so it looked like a part of the rear end with all the dirt grease and rust.
Do you have a Ford axle (Third member removes from front) or a Dana semifloat axle (cover plate on back of axle) The Dana 60.3 was an option on the 4X4 and may have been an option on the two wheel drive.

The Dana 60.3 was optional on 1966/69 F100 2WD/4WD's. It's not listed for F100's after 1969 which I verified before typing post #2.
The Dana 60.3 was standard equipment on 1969/74 E300's.
The Dana 60.2 was optional on 1963/65 F100 2WD/4WD's.
The Dana 44 rear axle w/Limited Slip was optional on 1959/69 F100 2WD/4WD's.
Limited Slip introduced 1959, but Ford did not offer an F100 with a 9" w/Limited Slip until midyear 1968.
