Test new TPS while fully installed?

I replaced my TPS today and need to test to make sure it is within range. Do I probe it after fully installed, or can I just back probe while out and is just connnected at the harness so I can move it as needed? Also, can I use a safety pin to back probe it so I don't have to puncture the wires? Thanks!

You can connect leads and check by back probing connector. Just lay tb on engine and test volts. You don't have to puncture wires just go in back of connector.

Thanks! This sounds stupid, but do I need to connect all the coolant/vacuum lines and cables before I turn on the ignition, or can I just hookup the sensor?

i can't help but wonder why you didn't test the original, and why you are replacing it . what symptoms were you experiencing and why all the coolant and vacuum lines disconnected ? it's like wandering into the middle of a repair, but not knowing what is being repaired.
also, what engine are you working on and what year ?

I got a code 122 and tested low voltage at the TPS at the dealer, so I was trying to save money by installing it myself. I disconnected them so I could clean the throttle body gain access to the TPS. Hard shifting, hard starting, rough idle.

sounds like you may be on the right track then.
a bad circuit could also generate that code, so check wiring and connectors if replacing the TPS itself doesn't do the trick.

Don't need to connect anything but tps to set it. Just check ref. volts, low and high signal. Also, you probably know this but, don't mess with "idle screw". Once it's set, reinstall and go.
