2007 explorer ignition swith replacement

Hello, just acquired a 2007 explorer and have a little issue where the interior lights occasionally come on while driving. Did a little investigation and found that when I wiggle the ignition key the lights come on. Also noticed that when vehicle is shut off and door is open, I can wiggle the key and the "key in ignition" chime is intermittent. I'm guessing I need a new ignition switch and have a few questions regarding replacement of the switch. I'm assuming the ignition keys have the chip in them and was wondering if I will have to reprogram keys or the switch or whatever...And if reprogramming is necessary, is it something that I can do myself?? Also, it looks as if I can replace the switch separate of the ignition lock cylinder. Will just replacing the switch fix my problem or do I need to replace the lock cylinder tumbler assembly as well??

Thanks!
Ben

The SecuriLock antenna for the transponder keys is a loop around the key cylinder. You can replace the ignition switch without having to reprogram keys. However, if you replace the key cylinder you'll need to either reprogram the system for the new keys or change the tumblers to match the existing key. I'd recommend if you decide to replace the key cylinder, you get one that comes with the tumbler set and instructions on how to set the new cylinder to your existing keys.

Since the "key in" features seems to the issue, I think you're needing a new key cylinder rather than an ignition switch. Maybe you'd be lucky enough you can just remove the cylinder, spray some electrical parts cleaner in it, cycle it a few times, and get a few more years of life out of it. The switch inside the cylinder may just be dirty.

I have the same issue with my 2007 Explorer. It's been an annoyance for quite some time. I'd love to resolve it if it's a relatively simple (and inexpensive) fix. Ben, did you find resolution?

thanks!
Sandy
