What to look for when my headliner is down

A couple months ago I found a thread that had some pictures of a man's excursion ceiling with the liner down. there were some rust spots and he told about something he sprayed on them (I dont think he cut them out or patched them)

but I cant find that thread. Can anyone answer what that might have been he put on them or point me to that thread? I cant find it now and I am about to have a dvd player installed and would like to have the celing deadened while I am at it and to try to take care of any possible rust spots while the liner is down.

I assume it would cost exponentially more to have the liner taken down past where the player goes (right?) so I probably wont have the ceiling behind the player done. Would it be worth it to have the ceiling to the player deadened? I would think any little bit would help. and with any left over deadener I would do the doors anyway

From what I have read taking the headliner down is a two person job.

It's all or nothing. If your going to drop the headliner do some insulation(heat wave pro or styrofoam depending on your budget) and some sound deadener. Yes, it is a two person job. There is nothing between the headliner and the metal roof that's why the X sucks in the summer. I did both of the above and tinted the front window- huge for Florida heat. Can't they install the DVD without dropping the headliner?

those cross beams that run from side to side...i put some of that expanding foam in the gaps because a lot of them were loose to the touch, so i figured some foam can't hurt in helping vibrations when driving.

thanks for the response.
this is what I have ordered

and

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...iglink20368-20

I need to order more unless you advise me against using this stuff.

I shouldve put this in the original post but the installer told me the entire liner had to come down, it was a 6 hour job at least (at 60$ and hour) and he would have to make a bracket for the dvd player.

Is this correct do you know? I didnt ask if he had done an excursion before.

It will take at least 6 hours if they are jumping it. There is a lot to take apart to get the headliner down and then to do the DVD is another question. I would think 10 hours?

I like closed cell foam.... this stuff is 2lb density so it has some structural strength but it ain't cheap.

What does jumping it mean?

And you're right he said 10 hours. I confused the 6 with 60 an hour.

I wouldn't think you would have to pull the headliner to in stall a dvd. Should beable to get it down enough to do what needs to be done by a guy who knows what he's doing. Now with that said I tend to over do things and would probably pull it and sound deaden the roof while doing it. But that's me.

I'm the same way (of course thats why I'm researching doing the whole ceiling), but if the headliner doesnt have to come down, then I dont want to spend 600 or more bucks right now deadening the ceiling (maybe at tax return time or something). I dont mind spending alot of money on something I am going to keep (I have 4 children the oldest is 7 so a working dvd player is kind of needed and I plan on keeping this x for ever.)

And I read elsewhere on this forum (again, I cant find it now) that the headliner did NOT need pulled down for the dvd replacement. I wish I could find someone that had replaced the dvd player on an ex and could do mine without taking down the headliner (I could spend a couple hundred on diesel getting there and still come out ahead). and get my speakers put in my doors and the subwoofer put in while I'm at it.

If the headliner is out, it is the perfect time to install clearance lights if you want that look for your Excursion...

sorry for the delay. i just used that spray can expanding foam from Home Depot/Lowes. i used the blue can (i think its blue) that says it's for windows and doors, because that kind expands but stops when it fills whatever gap it's in. the regular red can just keeps expanding longer and i didn't know if it would be enough to raise the thin sheet metal on top of the roof, so i just went with the blue can.

So I pushed my hand up above my head in the driver seat and it feels like there's a 1/2 inch of stuff above the actual headliner material. I assumed I would feel the metal and not any cushion?
