E4OD Tranny won't engage into any gear

I have a 96 F150 4x4 with automatic tranny(E4OD). I was going to work one day and I heard a clunk kinda sounding noise and acted like it was in neutral. It will not go into any gear, Park Drive or reverse. None. First i thought it was the linkage but it is all in tact and seems to be fine externally. However when I shift it into park the rear driveshaft wont move, drive it only goes one direction and reverse the other wway. and neutraul just like its in nuetral. But it wont drive anywhere. So it seems to be going into gears but wont go anywhere. First I was told the tranny was bad, then I was told the torque converter was bad, then I was told it was the chain in the trasfer case. So my question is whats the problem? Ive been told these several options but nobody seems to really know for sure. Anyone out there that has any ideas?

i was about to ask if it was 4wd and then you mentioned the t-case.
start there and i think you'll (hopefully) find your problem.

Have you checked the transfer case linkage?

If it won't roll when it park the transfer case is fine. If it does roll in park then it's the transfer case.

When you're in drive, try pushing the "Cancel O/D" button, and see if starts to move again.

It rolls in park. the drive shaft does not turn with it though. i was fixing to start tacking the transfer case off but thought id check first though. No matter what you put thee truck in(park, reverse, drive, or even 4x4 hi or lo) it des nothing. it will just roll like its neutral but the shaft does not turn when it rolls. but if you try turning the drive shaft with your hand in park or reverse or drive it spins accordingly to how it should if there was no problem. A friend of mine asked his mechanic buddy and he said its probably the chain broken inside the tranfser case. which isnt just too terribly difficult to put a new one in if your careful about doing it.

Okay let me get this straight, with the transmission in park, the truck rolls but the driveshaft doesn't spin? In drive, the driveshaft spins but the truck doesn't move?

Your rear axle has failed, if I have the above correct.

Your rear driveshaft shouldnt be spinning with your hand. Something is seriously wrong with your diff or axle shafts like Lead Head said

No. The rear drive shaft does not spin for anything when the truck rolls. but if your put it in park, reverse or drive the shaft will not spin with the truck when it rolls. you can rotate it with you hand in R one direction and the other way in drive. But wont the rear drive shaft do that anyways even under normal conditions(the being able to spin by hand if in R or D. )

No. The driveshaft is connected mechanically to the gears in the axle. If you can turn the rear driveshaft without the truck itself rolling, the axle has failed. If the truck can roll without the driveshaft turning, the axle has failed.

I agree. The problem is in the rear axle.

well the funny thing is is that the axle not long ago had work done to it and repaired any parts that were worn or needings replacing. rereand all seems to be all fine. i spoke to a 4x4 and drivetrain specialist and he said it sounded most like the transfer case bc the drive shaft can spin with your hand when in gear the certain direction and its not supposed to be able to roll ever without the shaft spining. and since it rolls even in park he said sounds like the chain or gear or something of that nature basically has broken in the transfer case.

your in luck.the rear diff (so long as single rear wheel-edit.oh yeah,f150 so) is about the same cost of a used t-case but just a tad harder to replace.either way it's a couple Bens and an afternoon.still much better than an e4od replacement.
