My rear-end is making clunking noises along with grabbing and a sensation of being out of round. It started yesterday when I was turning, now it does it while going straight, not all the time though.
That wouldn't do me any good. I wouldn't know what i was looking at and then I would be without transportation.
Look at the gears and see if theyre chipped. Jack up the rear and have someone turn the rear wheel. Listen for the clunk. Could be a worm bearing or even a u joint on your driveshaft.

If you don't know what you are looking at how do you expect to fix it? Depending on what is wrong, special tools are required to replace bearings and set up the ring and pinion. By the way the rear is an 8.8 and not an 8.5
The rear driveshaft in my '94 had too much play in the splines. It would bang when shifting between drive and reverse. Start checking for something worn or broken....
What Manfred said is the proper approach, lift the rear, take the diff cover off, do a visual/ear inspection for visible damage, broken teeth, chips, debris in the gear oil. Also turn the the axles for both a complete inspection and checking for clunking noises.
