Tough to Turn

Tough to Turn
I am the first owner of a 2005 F250 SD with the V10 engine. After the engine is up to normal temperature, EVERY TIME I turn my steering wheel hard right or left it dies. It started doing this when it was less than a year old and had 10,000 miles on it. There is no “Check Engine” light, therefore, every time the Ford service people hook it to their reader there is no error code so, of course, they always tell me there is nothing they can do. I use the truck to pull a fifth-wheel trailer but these days that usually means a yearly trip ten miles from the storage lot to our RV park site. The total vehicle mileage is 78,000. Less than 5000 of that has been pulling the trailer. It has never been used to haul heavy loads other than the fifth-wheel. I changed the fuel filter less than 2000 miles ago and nothing changed. I have done all of the routine maintenance myself so it has never been late for an oil change or any other routine service. Does anyone else have this problem? Has anyone figured out how to fix it? I will very much appreciate any assistance.

This is a new one for sure. Are you at idle or close to it when this happens or moving? Has anyone checked the throttle position sensor? It would seem to me that if this was my issue, I would find a shop that is willing to plug in to the computer and get a live data stream while you try to duplicate the problem.

Thank you, both, for your thoughtful answers. Yes, it does happen at idle but is much more likely to happen if I am applying a little throttle when I turn hard. You can imagine what a pain it is when I'm trying to back my 35' fifth-wheel into a tight spot! I do have a local service shop with people I trust so I will take it there with your suggestions in hand and see what happens. I'll keep you posted. Thank you, again. Stan

Interesting...
Do you have a scan tool handy? Curious to see your idle fuel trims. When the engine is up to temp it runs in open loop mode, which adjusts the mixture based on feedback from various sensors. Almost sounds like a mixture problem is causing it to bog and die.
I've never killed an engine at full lock, I don't think U-joints could cause this.

I have never heard of such a thing. Just shocking. I am going to assume the problem is exactly what you say it is. And that makes me wonder if the power steering pump pressure is going super-high. You would think the engine would still run with the power steering pump locked up tight, but who knows. Can you see power steering pump pressure by OBDII? Would be interesting to look at.

I wonder if he noticed any belt squeal or if the serpentine belt has any burned areas or glazed appearance to it.

Thank you, all, for your timely responses. I was, definitely, hoping that this was some fairly common problem that had a quick and easy fix. There is no squealing, the belt looks fine. I have to take a few days break for a total knee replacement but will try out all of your suggestions as soon as I am back on my feet. I very much appreciate everyones' time and efforts. Stan
