black smoke, jerking, sputtering, now no start

I have had a problem where truck would start jerking and sputtering in a certain town at low speeds. Today it happened in a new place. Barely got it to start back up. Was running rough after the puff of black smoke. Its stranded at a gas station. Recently replaced my sending unit. Was running good. Clean gas tank. Fuel lines tight. Where should I begin? I have an ICP sensor in the glove box. Truck wouldnt start. Help please.

What kind of CPS are you running? Is it OEM?

I have heard that aftermarket CPS's (and may a whole range of other sensors too?) are prone to electrical / magnetic interference. I am wondering if there is something in the vicinity of where you have problems that is causing this issue?

If you have any aftermarket sensors, I would look at trying to replace them with OEM.

Yeah. I have heard that to. I have replaced the ebps sensor but it said it was a ford and it was doing this prior to that. I have an OEM ICP in the glove box but I don't have the others. Anything i can unplug or short out to just test it?

The truck can run with the ICP unplugged. It will throw a code due to being unplugged, if it improves how the truck runs then you have have found the culprit, also look for oil in the ICP sensor plug. If it has oil in it the sensor is in its way out. The ICP should not cause the truck not to start though.

Do you have any way of monitoring what going on with the sensors? AE, torque pro, Forscan, etc?

I am not saying any of these sensors is directly causing your issue, mentioned it more for a heads up.

How is your filter looking? Have you changed it recently? Was it all black when you did?

Unplug ICP. PCM will use a default value so the truck will run. Not well but better than not at all. If this works, or if harness there is wet with oil, install OE ICP sensor. Aftermarket has same issues as Rikster mentioned with CPS.

Changed the filter a week ago when we replaced the sending unit and cleaned the tank. I do have torque pro. Can I get sensor reading without the truck running?

That all depends on the sensor you are trying to read. Some need the truck to be at least cranking, if not running in order to tell what is actually going on.

I am not familiar with torque pro, but can you log data with it?

Yes, you can log data, but it has to be running. You can look for any codes thrown, Only have to have KOEO, (Key On, Engine Off) Is the SES light on?

I went back to the gas station yesterday morning on the way home to try and start the truck. It did start and run, but the idle was very rough until the engine eventually died. I was going to pull the ICP sensor pigtail and start it again. Pigtail didn't seem wet and I didn't notice oil around the sensor. I noticed the sensor was loose enough to remove without a tool so I went ahead and dropped in the new one I bought a few weeks ago. I didn't have the right socket size to go around it and toque it down, so I finger tightened it and plugged it back in. She fired right up and seemed to be idling well. So I drove home over 110 miles and another 25 miles this morning. No problems yet. The old sensor looked a lot like the new International one I put on so maybe it was not aftermarket. Does anyone know what size the nut on it is? I put a 1 3/8" around it and it was too big, 1" was too small. Was thinking a 1 1/4" or 1 1/8" should do the trick. I didn't check the garage for one, but will buy a deep one today if I don't have one.
