Help with identifying what this does

Hi all. I'm a noob having recently and finally (Finally!!) purshased a '70 F100 Custom with a 360 in it. I need help understanding what a ****/'pulley-thing' on my dash is and whether or not it is a hack. I would really appreciate your input.

Next to where the cigarette lighter is supposed to be is a **** (to the left). It slides in and out with tension, no 'click' like a switch. Operators manual says that this should be the emergency lights - clearly not here. Behind the dash I can see it is connected to a tension cable that goes through the firewall and connects to an entry point on the engine block, just behind the distributor. Pictures below. What the heck is this for and why would it be there?

My initial inclination was a choke cable and ****. However, it appears to be inserted into the intake as a sensor and that doesn't make sense. Are you sure you're tracing it accurately?

That looks like it is for a manual choke for sure. Look closer to the center on the firewall, there looks like another one that comes through the firewall. Look on the carb for an auto choke or see if there is a tension cable hooked to the top butterfly on the carb. Might work that from the inside and have someone look on the carb and see if the butterfly moves.

You helped me figure it out. I decided to trace it one more time and realized my mistake. The cable in question is actually hooked up to a non-functioning Sunpro thermostat under the dash. The cable hooked up to the k n o b is actually the manual choke on the carb. Thank you!
