carb I.D.
I have a 1986 F350 4X4 mason dump with a 460 and manual trans. It is a site and and plow truck and not on the road. I am done with it in Maine for the season and it is coming home to NJ this weekend for the winter so I can't look at it untill it is home. It has the original OEM carb which I don't know the make or model and the choke never worked since I got it. It was never an issue when I used it in the summer but now with winter use I want to install a cable operated choke. My question to the experts is, did this truck come with only one model carb and if so can it be converted to manual choke. I would like to be ready when I get it home to save time now that winter is here.
Thank you
I have installed many of these, and if you want a little advice, go ahead to take the time and trouble to drill a hole in the firewall behind the carb. Make several trips inside and outside the firewall to make sure you do not drill through anything important. Then cut the cable to the length you need to mount the control over the tranny hump, under the dash, pointing toward the driver. This will keep the cable short, and it will have only one gradual 90 degree turn.
I have run the cables over to the drivers side, through an existing hole in the firewall, and then up to the dash, but they never do work well with all those bends in the cable.
