which shocks

Everyone will suggest a different shock, so I'll just tell you anything from OE ride quality to improved handling versions from most name brand manufacturers will give you comfort and decent handling. Might want to check out KYB, they make decent shocks and offer many different models. I haven't gotten a chance to do it yet, but I decided to go with KYB shocks after a lot of research, and I have a friend that is running the OE shocks on his Bronco and they turned out well. I'm running factory Monroe gas magnums and they are worn and bobbling around. Bilstein will always be recommended as well but they are the most expensive as well as possibly being too stiff if you want a very comfortable ride.

I've had Monroe Sensa-Trac's on my '88 for like 100,000 miles and they're still working fine (I have the OEM Quad Shock arrangement). The gator boots have even survived this long Was great improvement from the HD shocks that were in it when I got it - way too harsh on the street.
You don't need a ton of dampening at rock crawling speeds. Out jumping in the desert is a whole nuther thing.
If you have the single style front shock system, now would be the time to install the 3/4 ton truck shock towers so you can run a longer bodied shock for more droop and better off road compliance/articulation
