2006 Expedition TPMS fault / nightmare

Hello. I have read several threads on this site regarding 2006 Expedition TPMS faults and while some of the issues are similar to what I am experiencing, none are exact and I have a few unanswered questions.

I have a 2006 Expedition Eddie Bauer Series. Many times when you start the vehicle, The TPMS icon blinks and the display reads "Tire pressure sensor" fault. I am able to reset it by pushing the reset button. Usually, it comes back on while driving. I took the vehicle to my local tire place and they supposedly hooked the scanner up but told me that none of the four sensors are responding...so they did not think it was the sensors, and suggested I take it to Ford. I am still considering ordering four new sensors off of EBAY and having them break the tires down and install them to at least eliminate those from the equation.

-Is there a central monitoring "box" that the sensors report to, and if so, has anyone had issues with it?

-My spare tire has a normal rubber valve stem, so I'm "assuming" that it is not monitored. Does anyone know if that is the case ?

-I do not think that on my model, the display will tell you which tire is actually low. I think it just gives you the fault icon and then you have to check all of the tires...unlike newer models. Does anyone know if I am correct / incorrect about this ?

- If I am correct about the above statement, and the vehicle simply reports a fault and does not specify which tire / wheel is at fault, do I need to train the new sensors for each tire location ?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can impart.

These senors have a life expectancy of about 10 years, and yours is around that time. They communicate with the Vehicle Security Module (VSM) which is located above the fuse box on passenger side, kind of behind the glove box but buried a little in there. In order to know if this module has a fault or not, you need to read the codes out of it. Use a bluetooth OBD adapter like the OBDLink MX and the app FORScan on Windows or on Android phones to read all codes, or take it to the dealer or someone with a capable scantool.

The usual suspect is the sensors, but it's not unheard of that the VSM fails. If the VSM fails, it depends on how it fails. It controls a number of systems, like remote keyless entry, the door code panel, the auto light feature and so on.
