Anyone have any experience buying a used Uhaul truck?

I'm looking to buy an old 14' box truck to convert the back into a camper. Uhual lists several '97 F350 box trucks in various states of repair. Anyone have any tips on dealing with them, how flexible they are, etc?

Thanks for the help.

They are just like anyone else that sell their company trucks. They put a higher price on the vehicle knowing someone will make them a lowball offer and try to meet somewhere in the middle. My personal experience renting these truck, they are beat up and on their last leg. I personally wouldn't buy one unless I was prepared to rebuild it from top to bottom.

It would definitely be one of my last options, so many different driving styles (and people driving vehicles they don't own/don't care for) really can wreck a truck.

Like these guys said, people BEAT U-Haul trucks mercilessly. They don't own it, so they don't care what happens. I wouldn't pay over 1000 for even the prettiest 97 U-Haul truck in existence.

If it was a Ryder truck I'd be more comfortable....at least they maintain their fleets, UHaul, not so much. In fact, I was at one of their rental centers a few weeks ago helping a buddy rent a car dolly/trailer. While in the yard I was looking at their trucks and man were they beat! They really just don't seem to care.
One other thing: Uhaul has a policy, at least when they sell their trailers, to put them on a 'Salvage' title....be very careful here....

I figure they can't be in much worse shape than the '95 F250 I bought last year. I bought it for $650, and have probably spent $2000 in parts, and $950 in tires with a transmission rebuild still needed. The POS PO had obviously not maintained the truck.

I wouldn't buy a u-haul truck. People beat the tar out of them cause if it blows up it ain't their problem. And I'm sure they don't take the best care of them either...
