Question about rear axle.

Does this look like a normal 1960 f100 rear axle ? It looks different than my 1957, so I am curious.

looks like someone swapped in a different centre section into the original housing. probably wanted to get a lower gear ratio then the original ratios the truck came with. looks like a centre section from a car as it has the snubber thing on it. never seen a truck come with that.

I wondered about that little rubber thing on top. I didn't figure it would be needed on a truck. Is there any way to tell what the gear ratio is ? I don't know much about the truck it came out of,I bought it out of state and had it shipped.

The quick and dirty way is to turn both wheels at the same time in one full rotation, and count the number of times the pinion turns. For instance one full turn of the the wheels yields roughly 3-3/4 turn of the pinion, the ratio is probably 3.73:1.

The more accurate way is to open it up and count the teeth - ring gear divided by pinion equals the ratio.

Can't really tell for sure but is the tag for ID and ratio there? Looking at picture, right side, 1st bolt down from center line.

ID tag located at approx. 5 o'clock under one of the nuts that retains the carrier to the housing.

I did the wheel turning thing. I did it several time's to make sure. I got right at three turns of the pinion, so does that mean a 3.00 ratio ?
