Is there any way to find out your gear ratio by just looking inside the diff? My front axle broke and I have another dana 44 from a 78 F-250 to put in it but don't know if the ratios are the same. When I bought my truck it didn't have the axle tags on it and I don't know if he had changed the gears in it either. I was hopeing the ratio would be marked on the ring and pinion some where. Thanks for the help, Jake
there's a way to count the teeth but i dont know that one. This is what I did and I think it's right, I dont know to what extent your axle broke but if you can still turn it then try this. Turn the hub/wheel 20x and keep track of how many times the D shaft/u-joint turn and devide by 10. IE, if your u-joint turns 35 times you have a 3.50:1 ratio.
there should be stamped numbers on the crown that dana can interput for you. alot of gear shops should be able to do this, and most ford dealerships can do this with a little effort. count the teeth on the crown and divide it by the teeth on the pinion. the closest axle number to that exact number is your ratio. ie a answer of 4.89 is a 4.10. try that .
ps some times the numbers on the crown will say in plain english what the ratio is.
Thanks for all the help guys. I should be able to figure it out. One other question, a dana 44 from a 78 F-250 should bolt right in to a 74 F-250 shouldn't it. I haven't really compared them yet but thought they were both the same, except for the disc brakes. I hope to get it in the shop in a few weeks, I have to help a friend put a tranny in his Chevy. Jake
