Unhappy 6.9L diesel crossover pipe

I am near Tampa FL. I need a crossover pipe for a mongrel 198?(5-8) Ford F-?50 (2-3) that contains a 6.9L diesel with new style glow plug controller and standard 5 speed forward & 1 reverse. Does anybody have any idea where I can start looking? Do any manufacturers still make this pipe?

Rock Auto has a Walker pipe, one for '85-'87 6.9s, and another for '88-up 7.3s. Your description of your truck makes it hard to say which one you'll need, but start there.

The 1987 model year was the last year of the 6.9L and the only year that the 6.9L came with the newer solid state 7.3 style glow plug controller.

If it is in fact a 6.9L and not a 7.3L and unless the GP controller has been changed to the solid state style, the truck, or that is the engine, would be a 1987 model.

This is based only upon what I have learned about my own 1987 F250.
There is a very small chance I could be incorrect.
Anyone else want to confirm?

Does the truck have a turbo?
If yes, what brand, and what else can you tell us about it? (a picture may help a lot if you're not sure what you have)

My mongrel Ford

??? 6.9L or 7.3L , I wouldn't know one if it kicked me in the butt. This is my first ever diesel. I say its a 6.9L because the VIN on the cab that is a replacement cab says its a 6.9L. When one looks under the hood, everything is #%$&@'ed up. In 60 years of foolin' with carsand trucks, I don't think I have ever seen one so messed up. But I was looking for a Rollback and this one was available and in my price range.

I'll get and post some pics tomorrow when it is light again, if it is not pouring down rain.

pipe?

YES a "Y" pipe. In my father's garage where I started, we always called this a crossover pipe. I managed to locate one on eBay at a parts dealer up in NYC for $60+ with free shipping. It's a Walker 40565 and as long as it butts up to the exhaust manifolds, it will get used.

I'll probably have to manufacture the balance of the exhaust system as the PO put a cross-member from frame rail to frame rail to support transmission rear mount. He didn't even properly bolt it in. This truck will undoubtedly be a project to keep me busy for the foreseeable future. Fun Fun!

BTW, does this engine use a donut between the exhaust manifold and the "Y" pipe or does it bolt up naked?

It bolts up naked.
There are studs in the manifolds. Nuts hold the metal 'donut' that holds the flared end of the pipe in place.

6.9 uses a smaller head bolt. They are 7/16" 12 point, I believe. The 7.3 is 1/2" 12 point.

Based on that criteria, it is a 6.9L with 7/16 12-pt heads on the head bolts.

Because I am too lazy to go out and look, do you happen to know what size those nuts are? On my way to do "Y" pipe this morning.

I want to say they take a 5/8" socket, but could be wrong about that.

However, it just dawned on me that perhaps you're looking to buy new nuts, and you need the thread size.... Strangely enough, even though the body on my '88 is completely shot, the exhaust nuts have been good. Even the studs came out when I was putting the turbo on(that surprised the hell out of me!!)

Anyways... looking at the ATS turbo layout sheet, the studs are 7/16"x14 where they screw into the manifold. I don't know if they nuts are the same thread or not. So either 7/16"x14 or whatever 7/16"x fine is. Hope this is what you were looking for!
