Straight pipe 7.3 question
Im new to the diesel world, bought a 99 f250 7.3, someone once told me (a chevy guy) that if you were to straight pipe your truck you would need to tune it because it wouldnt run right. I would guess that what i was told is false but like I said I am new and dont know for sure.

Mine is straight piped diesel and I live in San Francisco. My neighbors don't complain -- drive it like you live there and nobody will complain. The point of a straight pipe is not to "impress" your neighbors, it is extra power when you need it.

When my son cut off his muffler on his 7.3 several years back, his truck sounded like a diesel version of a ricer f@rt can... not a good sound note at all. For a truly straight-piped approach where the length of the exhaust pipe remains intact, it might sound a little different, maybe better. Regardless, after hearing my son's truck with his approach, straight piping is something I would never consider doing to any 7.3.

As everyone has said there's no tuning modifications required for an exhaust change (of any type). Same goes for the intake.
You don't really need to worry about tuninig unless you are going with non-original injectors (oversized, single shots, modified nozzles, etc.). Tuning can take advantage of some modifications but is not necessary in most applications.

Denny... just curious... is the whole setup still at the stock diameter, or did you upsize any of the exhaust components?

Forgot to mention that mine has a muffler. It is basically a straight pipe (4" opening down the center) with some baffles around the circumfrence to provide some sound-deadening. The baffles are beveled for directional attenuation with an arrow on the outside of the muffler. Install the muffler with the arrow pointed towards the rear and the noise is mildly attenuated. Point the arrow towards the front of the truck and the noise has "maximum" attenuation.
I have it pointed to the rear and the noise isn't too bad. I'm not a full throttle kind of guy so the noise is moderate. I live in a large neighborhood and, as Mike321 mentioned, I drive like I live there and have never received a complaint or comment on the noise.

7.3 Van guy here. And the type of guy that likes doing stuff like removing mufflers.
Thought it was going to make a difference in the ability of the diesel to "breath" better.
And (thought) that it would sound cool to be able to hear the turbo spool up...
My advice, DON'T waste your time to remove it. More than likely you will wish
you could get it back to the quiet sound it was before. NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE
IN POWER OR ANYTHING ELSE except being louder. And it's makes an open invitation
to any cop to pull you over and give you some crap and look you over for anything to generate revenue
for the local municipality. JMHO. DDT

I had 5" straight pipe for about 6 years. At first I thought it sounded okay. It was a little loud towing. Towing on a long trip, it was just plain annoying. I put a Walker big truck muffler on and I can tell you that it's much more pleasant to drive on long trips even when not towing. I'll never go back to a straight pipe.

When I finally found the local straight pipe guy at a gas station he said the same thing. None of the hundreds of people he drove past every single day ever said a word.....because it's impossible to unless you track the offender down. All the other neighbors around me talked about him and how obnoxious his truck was. If you're out in the boonies it might not be a big deal. If you live/drive in the city you are absolutely that guy that most people wish would go away.
