1994 turbo idi white smoke

I just picked up a 1994 turbo idi with 260000 miles on it. It starts good but runs rough and has lots of white smoke. Runs better after warmed up but still not right. I am plannimg on doing a tune up. I will have the injectors checked but was wondering if the tappets were hydraulic or solid and adjustable? Thanks

Lifters are hydraulic roller lifters.

Your problem is most likely timing. Advance the pump a few degrees and see if it helps. IP and injectors are probably worn(out) by this time.

We had an old 84' van that after rebuilding blew white smoke; we thought it was timing, but turned out to be a water.

When we rebuilt the engine, we didn't have the money to get the block checked, and it turned out that it had several cracks; we checked carefully but didn't see them.

All in all, we were able to run it for 30k miles before it really grenaded.

Does this fuel system use a return check valve that I could check and see if its plugged?
