rain and cps

2001, f-250 4x4, 7.3, intake, exhaust, superchips tuner, and gauges

Has anyone who lives in a humid/rainy area experienced their truck shutting down when it rains(similar to a cps failure)? Runs great when it's dry out though. SES light comes on and a code is thrown, cant remember which one though.

I live in jacksonville fl so it rains here nearly everyday in summer. I'll be cruising on the highway and it will stutter a few times then sometimes shutdown while going 60mph plus. Big concern of mine especially when I have the kids with me.

I've changed the CPS a few times and inspected the wiring, all looks ok. Anything I might be overlooking?
Any suggestions/tips-tricks welcome.

Thanks ya'll.

Its more of the wiper motor than the cps. There is a ground below the wiper motor on the firewall that can be cleaned.

Also, are you using oem sensors? The aftermarket ones are more prone to electrical interference from the wiper motor.

^^ What he said. ^^

I had issues with using the wipers when I was running a parts store (BWD brad) CPS. Changed back to the OEM grey one and no problems since.

Windshield

The other thing to consider is if your windshield is leaking, water onto the PCM will cause the same. take a hose to the drivers side and get it good and wet, look for a leak under the dash on the drivers side.

I can go all in and bet that he's running an afternaket cps, its not the rain dripping through the windshield. Its the interference from the wiper motor.

TO THE OP: Get rid of that aftermarket cps it's a extreme hazard when you need to use the wipers.

The reason it's a hazard is because the wipers will cause the truck to hiccup while driving and if your running a chip and its on a high hp that sudden hiccup will not be good for the motor.

Second, when you start coasting to a stop the engine will die and you will loose brakes and power steering in the rain and you can't start the truck until you put it in neutral and cycle the key off to on once.

Parts store cps costs the same as the oem from Ford, so why not get it and be safe? $30. You may have heard that the grey cps from ford isn't too good because cylinder 3 & 8 will fail a CCT sometimes, but its not a big deal and you will not notice any driving issue's AND you can drive in the rain without having a heart attack.

Trust me, it's from first hand experience and happened many times just like you described. Especially when its rush hour on the highway and you gotta go from 55 to 5 mph in a hurry. Keep your family safe and go get the oem cps, the wiring is fine it's just the interference those aftermarket cps' have.

Hope this helps, best of luck to you!

Just curious does it only happen on intermittent wiper mode. Skip the Ford or aftermarket cps, put in and international and problem solved. Otherwise use your wipers on slow or fast, not intermittent. ccc

I would say because the signal the wiper sends to shut the wipers off also shuts the cps off and it chokes the truck. On slow or fast the motor is always recieving power only the speed is adjusted. On intermit. the power signal gets cut, possibly disrupting the cps.
