Wanna swap to a manual trans from AOD to a 4 or 5 speed

Can you guys give me maybe a link to an auto to 5 speed swap?

in my 85 i want to take the AOD out and id like to put in a 4 or 5 speed.

Heres what i have.

I have a 302/AOD 2wd Truck

and I can easily get a 300/t-18 4x4 truck

I considered swapping the clutch setup out of the 4x4 into the 2wd, then putting a 5 speed into it. Or does anyone know if you can swap on a different tail shaft and maybe i just run the 4 speed?

The only thing is im not a huge fan of the T-18, they dont shift real well. So i was thinking of going to either a T-5 or a ZF5. might as well get the 5 speed if im gonna swap.

let me know what yall think.

If you don't like the T-18's shifting you aren't gonna like the ZF5's shifting. It is a truck tranny and it shifts like one.

Before picking s tranny you need to decide what you are going to do with the truck. Like cruise or haul/tow. What gears and tires do you have? What speed do you drive? If towing or hauling you don't want one of the light-duty transmissions, like the M5OD. But if you are just cruising then that's a fine tranny. If you drive at high speeds on the highway you'll want a tranny with an OD, but if you are mainly around town or low speeds a 1:1 top gear, like the 4 speeds have, might be fine. But if you have tall gears, like 3:00 or taller, your 302 might not pull an OD.

So, tell us more.

(edit: Oops, my brain must have slipped into neutral there. I had an AOD in my Bronco and now I have an NV3550, but I did the ""swap" in two steps, first putting the original 3 speed back in, then years later the 5 speed. That, plus it's a 4WD and even more it's a Bronco means my swap is REALLY unlikely to help here. So ignore the first paragraph that's in italics.)

I swapped an NV3550 into my Bronco. It starts somewhere on page 3 of my build thread (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...pective-3.html). I went with the NV3550 because I was going with an Atlas transfer case and that was an easier swap than a Ford trans to an Atlas. Since you're 2WD you won't have the same issues, so my swap might not help you at all.

And I don't think converting a 4WD trans to a 2WD trans is likely to be worth it. You have to completely disassemble the trans to get the 4WD tailshaft out and put the 2WD one in, it's not just unbolting the old and bolting on the new from the outside. But if you end up with a 4WD trans you like and the transfer case, you can put the t.case in without putting in a front drive axle or drive shaft. It adds weight and some additional parasitic drag, but it gives the option of low range which is nice backing up trailers or other slow speed maneuvering. It might not be worth what you have to give up, so I'm not saying it's necessarily a good idea. But it is an idea.

What year is the 300/t18 truck? If it's 80-86 you will need the clutch pedals, the clutch master, the slave and the line. All the 5 speeds that fit in these trucks have the bellhousing made onto them, so the bell from the t18 won't help you. I don't think you are going to like going from a overdrive automatic to a non-overdrive manual.

The donor truck is an 86.

Im curious as to using a T-5 trans.

The t-5 for the mustang appears to have the shifter too far back, but, the T-5 for an S-10 has it in the right place, also the T-5 has a removable bell housing, can i swap the mustang bell housing onto the S-10 T-5 and be good to go?

You will have to do a lot of web searching, I know the jeep guys go crazy swapping stuff around, you may find out from one of their sites.

Having it drive and shift like a car must be a very high priority correct? Otherwise it would be much easier to just swap in a M5OD or a zf 5 speed.

Correct,

I use this truck strictly for use on the roads, and around town. I consider it a "trar" Truck/Car. Its a car disguised as a pickup truck.

The only load it ever pulls is backing my boat into the garage, where the shortbox/reg cab really makes life a lot easier than my Crew Cab Long Box Super Duty, heck i can barely get the boat OUT of the garage with the diesel. hahaha

Also, a bit of craigslist searching has proven that there are many cheap used 5 speed trucks out there. So far the time being, im going to go that route. pick up the 2wd truck, swap parts out, sell the motor and recoup what ive got into the whole truck

That makes practical sense. I think you will like it ok, even though it is a truck transmission.
