Manual Transmission Swap
#2
It can be done, but the first question is why? If the '82 trans is one of the typical 4 speeds from that era you'll lose overdrive and get a non-syncro'd granny gear, giving you essentially a 3 speed. And if it is an overdrive trans I don't think they had a very good reputation for reliability or strength.
Second, it can only work if both trucks are 2WD or both are 4WD. You can't put a 2WD trans in a 4WD truck or vice versa (caveat: divorced transfer cases and complete rebuilds with new tailshafts and housings can be ways to do this, but both are too involved for most people asking the question).
If you are intent on making the swap I'm thinking the clutch linkage will be your biggest problem. The bellhousing between the '82 trans and the 351 it's attached to will fit your 302, but I think an '82 would have had a mechanical clutch linkage. If that's true then you'll need to find a bellhousing from a slightly newer truck (300 six, 302 or 351) with a hydraulic clutch. Even then you might have minor difficulties hooking everything up, but it should just be minor issues at that point. And no, you can't use the bellhousing from your 5 speed. The newer transmissions have an integral bellhousing, so you can't remove it.
If your truck is a 4WD your transfer case should attach to the earlier 4WD trans, or you could use the t.case from the '82. There might be some minor issues with transfer case shift linkage.
If both are 2WD (or if you use the '82 transfer case if 4WD) you will need to do something different with the rear driveshaft as the '95 would have a slip yoke while the '82 would have a fixed yoke. A driveshaft shop could make what you need (bring them the 'shafts from both trucks as parts donors). And even if you are reusing your t.case you'll probably need to get the driveshaft lengths changed since the 4 speed is likely shorter than the 5 speed.
