E40d Shifting

Hello, I am New to the IDI world. I have a 92 f250 4x4 with the 7.3 and E40D trans.

Is it normal for these transmission to want to rev high on every gear?
In order to let the trans shift to the next gear I have to let off the throttle.

I have read a couple forums on here on setting up the TPS with a volt meter and it was off just a tad. And didn't see a difference

welcome to FTE.

nope that's not normal.at first i thought you might be describing shift flare but it's not a slight "free revving" between shifts right? it's pulling strong (just higher than it should be) between the shifts correct?

if the latter, then i think you are on the right track by heading to the FIPL (also known as TPS)
when testing the tps,did you keep the meter on it and slowly raise the throttle up to wide open? if so,did you notice any quick swinging of the needle (or reading 0 if digital) during this sweep test?

i should make sure of the basics as well just in case;
does the light on the od/cancel button work? is it off (unless you press it) or flashing?

Thanks for quick reply.

I did do a sweep of the TPS. I couldn't find any dead spots
It pulls thru the strong thru 1,2,3 But recently its started sometimes free revving in overdrive once a while.

It got me thinking wiring but No Flashing O/D Trans code yet. I checked all the connectors I could see. I made sure they were clean and tight even the one under the hood by the mater cylinder

A/T - E40D FIPL (TPS) Sensor Trouble Shooting & Adjustment (Diesel Applications Only)

did you set the tps to the values shown in the link above? you can try bringing the idle down to 1.1 or 1.0 to get a sooner shift if need be.

That's a symptom of a failing TRS (Transmission Range Sensor.) It won't set a code. I recommend changing it.

So I tried to set it to 1.0 v and didnt notice a difference.

The Range sensor is that the one on the side of the IP thats being adjusted ?

Or is that the one on the side of the trans where the shift linkage goes into the trans ?

Also I was climbing a small hill and got the flashing o/d light. How do u go about finding the code for OBD1. Im used to useing a OBD2 setup

The TRS i on the side of the trans where the shift linkage is.

There are OBDI instructions at TROUBLECODES.NET

well this is good.that code(s) could really help ya figure out whats going on.though you can use a meter,it's not easy.a member here showed him pulling codes with one before in a vid.it's tricky to see the accurate swings of the meter which should be counted as part of the code.it gets the job done but it's not ideal.a $25 ford eec-iv (obd1) reader is handy to own.
you might have easier readings using a test light but still, you wont have a hold function or beeps to count, and you need to hold wot or else you get false code 23/tps.

I ended up just changing the TRS Sensor. haven't had any problems since. no more free revving in overdrive and high rpm shifts.

Thanks for your help !
