after 431k miles- Motorbug finally gets new injectors!
ordered a set of stock reman AD codes from Full Force through Clay.
they came in Thursday.
put them in friday afternoon.
a pretty gnarly thunderstorm hit just as i was getting ready to button it all up so i had to wait till saturday morning to do any serious testing.
first startup took about 20 seconds of cranking and immediately I noticed the difference.
no shake.
no grumbling to find idle.
smooth runnin!
it sat there and idled smoother and cleaner and QUIETER than i have ever heard her run. from in the cab i did notice something peculiar.
my passenger side pyro was reading about 100* colder than drivers side...
shortly after i noticed this... the passengers side bank shut down!
she stumbled for a second and then ran just fine on the drivers side bank... but damn... what the heck just happened to the passengers side?
all 4 were dead. no oil spitting... nuthin happenin!
this did not make for a happy Dr.
plugged in ae and reset everything... reset mil, kam , and buzz tested.
everything sounded fine except for a very weak audible from #8...
popped codes for #1, and #8...
curiouser and couriouser!!!
fired it back up...
smooth runnin!
okie dokie then...
poltergeist?
further testing....
lets check some throttle response and ipr/hpop action...
brought the rpms up to around 2500 and was watching the numbers... everything looked beautiful! numbers riding exactly where they should be!
bang! passenger side down again... (the bang was just implied nothing blew up)
WTF OVER!?
Starting to feel the onset of some focused rage... i get on the computey box and voice my concearns to both Clay and the good folks at Full Force.
I get responses from both much sooner than expected for a saturday (afternoon at this point)
Full Force is eager and ready to help... monday...
Clay offers the option to pull solenoids and swap around to further test the possible source of failure. being basically granted permission to dig in to the warranted set of injectors i just spent 1118$ and change on kinda made me nervous but in I dug.
after swapping the solenoid from #1 with one from one of my cores... the passenger bank kill scenario vanished.
with that confidently nipped in the bud... i buttoned up the passengers side and focused my attention on the weak buzz from #8.
fired up the truck...
glassy smooth idle...
give it some throttle and i can feel the dead hole in #8.
hmmm...
attempted to pull the solenoid from #8... and ... well... gorillas shouldnt be selected as the individual responsible for reinstalling the solenoid fasteners I must say...
two of the fasteners caticorner from eachother were overtorqued to the point the heads were stretched... dang near stripped out.
i had to hammer a #20 torx bit into them and ge on them with a 3/8 ratchet to bust them loose.
swapped it with my AE solenoid off my core...
buzz test...
same mess...
ok... i suppose it could have been crazy weak... lets try another one...
same.
and again...
SAME!
GGGRRRRRROOOOWWWWWLLLL!
(!LightBulb!)
*pulls all the connections loose from that injector to the 42pin connector...
sprays the crap out of every one with contact cleaner...
plugs everything back in...*
EUREEKA!
she makit the buzz now!
intermittent weak connection at the uvch to harness outside the vc.
it keeps kinda coming in and out... but now i have it pinpointed and can address.
once all that was buttoned back up from tinkering and swapping... road test time...
made sure to plug in the ae and record from the driveway.
actually even caught a cac boot blowoff while recording...
never been so glad to hear a shotgun blast go off under my hood!
i will post some stuff when i get my brain wrapped around how to do that stuff again... ive been out of truck, forum, ae mode for a while now.
immediate things to say about the new sticks...
Hell Yeah Baby!
i know its called the lie o meter for a reason... but i have gone from seeing 12mpg on the overhead at 70 to 18-20mpg at 70 on the same stretches of road. my pyros are running closer to syncronized than ever. acceleration out the wazoo... i can even poof me some smoke at will if i wanted lol. (definitely time for some real tunes now that the mickey mouse bully dog can harm something)
i kinda felt my face sucking back all the way to 80 from dead stop during wot...
permagrin achieved!

Congrats, Chris! I know the feelings... all of 'em. It's gunna be a whole different truck now, and you'll shift your attention to the next weak link. Pretty soon you'll be saying "I'm starting to understand Tugly better... a little". Be careful with that part - don't wanna spend much time there. It's toxic to normal people - it makes them abnormal (like me).

on this motor... i dont foresee any additional power adders save for a billet ww2.
i want a little faster spool time to keep the smoke down.
Brother Razzi,
yes i do intend to go visit Mr Gearhead sometime soonish.
a Hydra is definitely in Motorbug's future.

Once the backrest compression begins, it's hard to stop. Chip? WW2? Don't kid yourself, my friend.

for this truck... when the other motor goe in... it will get a set of 160cc single shot injectors that i will build myself. t500 or variant, full return with wvo, and a billet wheel on a stock turbo. 910 comp valve springs and brand new valves. im welding the oil squirters.
thats gonna be about it.
the block that comes out of motorbug will be built into a different kind of monster all together.

Congratulations!
On the Dodge Dakota-Durango.com forum petrock said the following about vehicle electrical issues, which I now consider very wise:
"Mechanics look to the component. Electricians look to the wiring."
Contact Enhancer, Dielectric Grease, and Micro Files
