Newly purchased 1984 Bronco II

I got her yesterday, very little surface rust, but the engine, tyranny and under carriage are rough.
Valve cover gaskets and possibly valve seals need replacing.
I just replaced negative battery cable.
The tranny knocks hard when shifting gears, what may be the cause? I have little reciprocating engine experience, but I don't know dick about trannies. This is an automatic.....

The auto used in the 84 was a C-5 3 speed. It was a C-4 with a lock up converter. Parts are no longer for the C-5 lock up. C-4 parts are still available and will work. I would first check the tranny mount and pull the cover and check the converter fasteners. Check the drive shaft and rear end. If all those are tight then the problem would be internal.

Thanks for the advice. Is the Chilton Bronco2 manual worth getting or is there a better one out there?

I have a Chilton's. It is ok. There are places where you need to know additional info. I am not aware of a better one.

Sweet thanks a lot. The ranger station has some good info on the tech forum, but I like picture books. It helps me get a better idea on how things work together.
