Alternator?

checked the alternator wire as it is going into the battery and it looks like it is only putting out 38 on hot idle, and 40 on high idle. looks like it is time for a new one.
I've looked at the advance auto site and found this one.
CARQUEST or ToughOne Alternator - New - 140 Amps 8478AN: Advance Auto Parts
any thoughts?

It would probably be expensive as hell since they cater to the government it seems like but there is a company called Penntex that makes kits for our trucks. Mine is an ex-emergency response vehicle and it has a 200 amp alternator in it. one of these days im going to call and see how much a replacement will be.

well I went to advance auto and had them check the alternator and there machine said "open diode" I believe. I picked up the one in the link I have above and now my voltage seems good. also my truck is a 2006. i'll check the amps with my clamp meter shortly. hopefully this is the end of changing parts for a little bit! Thank you all

About 70 amps and 95 amps at hot idle (not hi idle). I was able to use a clamp meter and measure mine hot idle 95 amps, 110 at high idle. My truck came new with a 140 upgrade and I ran it for 8 years with no trouble. I keep as a spare but am running a PRestolite 230 amp unit in my signature. Its actually for the International version of VT365 and its direct bolt in, you use your existing small pulley. They use these alteranators in international LCFs and F650 and F750s I beleive. My brother ordered it from his international dealer, hes on the parts counter. For me, ordering a DC unit is impossible. I am getting about 175 hot idle, over 200 high idle, but its brand new. We shall see how she does over the longer term....

Yup, that's the one, only mine is not black, it does not have the coating on it, just plain. Works good so far. To the original OP, are you reading amps or volts at the charge cable? Do you have a DC clamp meter and know how to read it? I would be interested to see what amps your new one is doing now, just for reference purposes compared to the old ones 40 amps. I am in a cold climate and I need the 230 amp in winter for cold temps short trips, summer she is charging 4 batteries a lot, pulling the RV. 140 I have was still working but in winter I was having to run the charger overnight from time to time.

I would get a 140 from Autozone, Advance, Oreillys, etc with the limited lifetime warranty (for less money) Unless you really need a 300A alt......

Yea I had them test it and then ordered it on my phone so I could get the $50 discount . While waiting for the order to process I pulled the old one off in the parking lot. 15 min later he brought out the new one and hooked it up. The whole thing didn't take longer than 30 min.
