Breaker 1-9... just brought back some fond memories of yesterday! Haven't seen many overhead for our trucks... I'm interested in what you find...

Takes me back to my custom van days. Made several overhead consoles back in the day, not difficult to do if you have basic woodworking skills.

I'm also going to build an overhead console - I think I'm going to go away from the modern trend of centerline and go across the header instead - I can install stereo, speakers, map lights, and cubby holes for storage...I think it will be straight forward once I get to that point.

Yes, I was thinking full width as well. Maybe make it from wood or aluminum....keep it light.

OldGreyMare, yes similar to that but not so bulky.

Yeah, it wasn't too hard. Made this out of 3/8" plywood. To attach it I ran a cross piece 1" wide by 3/16 metal bolted to each door frame and also bolted to the overhead frame. To hang the console I used turn buckles attached to the metal cross piece and the overhead frame. Allows me to draw the console up and adjust it left to right ect.

That's sweet looking, what are you using the various switches for? Thanks, L8R ZFLASH

Thanks. Switches are electric fan, fuel pump, backup camera and one spare (unused).

These are both "show" trucks that belong(ed) to members of Pickups Limited SoCal. The top one is a 55 and was a cover truck on Custom and Classic Trucks magazine. The console was built here locally by a guy who does beautiful aluminum work...if that console were mine I would have never covered it in fabric. The other truck is a 56 and has won best of class multiple times at the GNRS and other shows. I did not build the console and I am not sure who did...that said, it is very nice. I especially like the wood (which matches the wood in the bed floor) and the aircraft-style interior lights.

Chuck,

Are those guys attaching those to the stock bar that runs through the middle of the roof? Or are they having to add more supports?

I believe that completely new supports were fabricated. The original center support was fairly flimsy and only suited to holding a light and supporting the carboard headliner.
