CONVERT 5 LUG TO 8 LUG

I have a 79 f150 4x4 that has 5 lugs and want to convert to an 8 lug. Should I swap the diffs or change the spindle and rotor? Any suggestions?

Why do you want to do this conversion?

For the front you just swap out the complete front knuckle and everything attached to it, minus axles shafts. For the rear quicker and easier to swap out the complete 9" for a Dana 60.

"8 lug thug" yes that is funny. And I to am curious why you want to do this, is it so you get different rims that you can not get in 5 lug?

Or are all your parking lot buddies 8 lug thugs....lol Alot of work, for not a lot gained in the end IMO cause it will still be a 1/2 ton truck.

You truck, time and $, so go for it, post spme pics.

I do believe its more than a spindle and rotor swap, your 1/2 ton has a single piston caliper and the 8 lug rotor takes a duel piston caliper.

When I did it, you are mostly right, but I had to keep the F150 knuckles because the steering arms are different on the 250s. It caused some weird steering, so I had to swap it back to the 150 knuckle. Other than that, you are right, brakes, spindles and hubs.

Ted, if I understand you correctly, does that mean the D44 F250 caliper bracket, spindle, hub and rotor will bolt right on to the F150 knuckles? How about axle shafts?

I'm interested in this conversion for my '79 150 for the 8 lug wheels and dual piston calipers.

Why would you want 8 lug wheels? The bolt pattern makes it harder to find wheels and the wheels make it very expensive to find tires.

There didn't seem to be any problems with stopping, in 1979, with the 5 bolt pattern so why would it suddenly become an issue now?

Why complicate something 150% for a debatable 1% gain?

You know how us old guys used to make 'em stop faster? We didn't have phone in our hands when we were driving AND we started braking sooner.

Good luck

Not that one shouldn't do such a thing, but I'd wonder why do such a thing.

In my case, it'd make it easier to rotate tires amongst the three trucks...lots of spares

But then again, the F350 studs are 9/16...and left-handed... (actually, I had the left-handed studs swapped for rights, but from the factory...ugh...)

I’m doing the front end from 5 lug to 8 because I replaced my rear 8.8 (on my bronco) to a Dana 60 4.10 FF. Nothing worse than having to carry 2 spares because of different bolt patterns.

I thought about this once many years ago for my '77. As I recall, the front hub bearings were the same on a Dana 44, both for F-250 & F-150s. I was never sure about rotors working with single piston F-150 calipers, so I decided if I ever did it, I'd get my front rotors drilled for 8 lugs …. OR …. I'd get the rears drilled for 5 to match, or otherwise adapt. I dropped the idea in due time.

Nothing?
One maybe could build themselves a special spare wheel to fit both hole sets?

I still have the older large body (heavier weight wise)18 volt version, still a torque monster. Or get this and get your "8 lugger" swap on. https://www.dewalt.com/products/powe...l-only/dcf896b

1/2 drive like most impact rated sockets that are common lug nut size. 330 ft-lbs of max fastening torque and 600 ft-lbs of max breakaway torque to complete a wide variety of applications.

Or if you want a air run beast. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Ingersoll-R...Wrench/1062885

Great for changing your "8 lug 3/4 ton 79 F250's ol stocker rims out for some new ones. No more blisters from 32 lug nuts off and then 32 back on. lol

Here is something to cry over, and they need step torqued. Thanks goodness they are only 5 lug nut install rims. I was so tired of step torquing 32 bolts FOR EACH RIM, I did not mount them until the next day. lolX2
