I'm thinking the U joint possibly came apart and the subsequent vibration shook it to pieces or something came loose inside and got between the ring and pinion gear. That had to be a very severe load instantaneously applied to shear the pinion shaft and rip the pinion bearing cap right out of the housing.
Sheered pinion gear. Wouldn't have happened if was a dually. Can't always expect a SRW Dana to hold up compared to a DRW Sterling. What and how often is he pulling heavy?

I want to say he purchased this truck with over 200k on it so there is no telling. He pulls his 5ther quite often.
Used one sell for about $1,000. Couple of hours time and he'd be down the road. Far cheaper. Just make sure he gets the correct ratio. Check the axle code inside the door jam and make sure it matches if he's not sure of the ratio. This is mostly important if it's a 4x4.
I offered to drive down to Dallas and haul them back to Tulsa, but it's already at the Ford dealership getting worked on. If they were here when it happened I would be glad to knock it out for him.
The crazy thing is he just had the pinion seal and fluid changed less than a year ago.
